Australian Aerial Patrol was formed in 1957 following concerns by Life Savers of shark activities at beaches in the Illawarra. The Patrol’s charter is to maintain the safety and the welfare of the community through aerial observation and support. And forms the basis for which all operations and activities are conducted.
Illawarra Regional Airport (Wollongong Aerodrome) is a security controlled, licensed airport that is owned and operated by Shellharbour City Council. It is the base for a growing Light Aeronautics Industry, which provides maintenance and engineering services for aircraft ranging from ultra light to medium size turbo prop and jet aircraft.

Wings Over Illawarra is the annual air show held at Illawarra Regional Airport on the last Sunday of February each year, this air show has been growing in size each year and inclues a variety of historical and military aircraft performances and displays as well as on the ground activities that feature all of the operators at the aiport.
